Definition of a bed and breakfast (B&B), based on that given by the English Tourist Board.
Bed and breakfast is a British tradition of offering overnight accommodation in one's home, followed by traditional British food in the morning, known as full English breakfast.
Facilities aren't as grand as in a hotel but your bedroom will be comfortably furnished with plenty of storage space. Many rooms have en-suite facilities, but if they don't, you'll find a private or shared bathroom close by. Breakfast will usually be a feast - enough to take you well beyond lunch time - usually you'll start with cereal or fruit, often grapefruit, then there's any combination of the following: eggs, bacon, English sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans and bread and/or toast. In Scotland and Wales you'll notice interesting differences such as soda bread, smoked haddock or kippers.
Similar concepts are guest house (guesthouse) and lodgings. If you are from the Continent of Europe you will be familiar with the French equivalent Pension or Dutch Logies en Ontbijt .
